St. Paul’s Cathedral

On Tuesday morning, 14 June 2011 the students studied at St. Paul’s Cathedral in London.  They saw the American Memorial Chapel behind the high altar that was dedicated by the British people to the 28,ooo American soldiers, sailors, and airmen who were stationed in the UK during WWII and who died as a result of their service in the war. Although the cathedral survived the German bombings of the Blitz of 1940, the area east of the high altar was severely damaged and when rebuilt in the 1950s it became a significant memorial of thanks from the British to the Americans.

This historic photo  below shows St. Paul’s Cathedral during the London Blitz in 1940. Photo is from the Churchill Museum and although the church was hit several times, it survived largely intact. The area nearby was totally destroyed in the bombings and the fires that followed.
